How Does the Typical Car Tinting Process Work?
Window tinting laws set a specific VLT (visual light transmission) percentage for four basic type of windows of a car – front, back, windshield and rear. In the US, some states set higher VLT rates, while others set the rate lower.
- Front Windows – the prescribed VLT rate for front windows ranges from 27% to 40% in most parts of the USA, with the exception of California, Rhodes Island, Pennsylvania, New York and Alaska, which can allow up to 70% tint darkness. Michigan is also not too strict on the VLT level. According to the window tinting laws of this state, you can install whatever type of film you prefer.
- Rear Windows – Most states recommend using auto glass tints with a VLT of 30% to 40%. Some areas such as Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana and Kentucky, prescribed using window films that have around 10% to 20% VLT.
- Back Windows – Most states require a VLT rate of around 20% to 40% darkness level. There are a few number of states, including Nevada, Ohio, North Dakota and Vermont that can allow whatever VLT rate. As for states like Minnesota, New York, and Pennsylvania, the recommended darkness level is 50%, and 70% respectively.
- Windshield – In general, there is no specific prescribed VLT rate for windshield. You only need to make sure that the glass is tinted at no more than 6 inches from the base.
Some states have more specific car tinting laws such as in Alaska, California, Colorado, and Georgia, where they prohibit using amber, yellow or red tints. Other states are required to have double side mirrors if the back-side auto glass is tinted.
