A damaged auto window tint will not only look unattractive, but it will also deprive you of the same level of UV protection and privacy like before. And while you can bring your car to a tinting shop, removing car window tint film can be done in the convenience of your home.
Peel Off Your Window Tints like a Papier Mache
If you have a bunch of newspapers lying around, here’s a good use for them! Start off by mixing warm water and dishwashing liquid. Make sure the mixture is a little soapier than when you do your dishes. Apply the soapy mixture to the damaged car window tint film. Cover it with a sheet of newspaper and leave to dry for about an hour. Apply more of the soapy mixture on the newspaper every 20 minutes.
To peel the newspaper and tint together, use a knife or a razor. Just be careful not to scratch the window surface. If there are any stubborn adhesive residue and auto window tinting film left after the first application, just repeat the steps above.
Have Your Car Window Tint Sun Bathe in Ammonia
If it’s sunny outside, consider using ammonia. Ammonia in warm temperature can help remove adhesives from the car window tint film easily. Cut and tailor-fit garbage bags to the two sides of the window that you want to treat. Apply soapy water as discussed above on the damaged auto window tint and cover with a garbage bag. On the other side of the window, spray ammonia and cover with a garbage bag as well. Remember to keep the car door open so the toxic fumes will not be trapped inside the car. In about an hour, the garbage bag along with the tint will be easy to remove.
Give Your Damaged Window Tint a Hair Treatment
Another method you can use to remove damaged car window tint film is through your hair dryer. Hold your hair dryer at around two inches away from the window tint you’d like to remove.
In about 30 seconds, you can start peeling the window tint with your fingernails. Continue blowing the hair dryer at the same distance and peel the auto window tinting until everything comes off. Wipe off adhesive with a paper towel. If it sticks, you can use your hair dryer again for 30 seconds and still try wiping it off.
After using any of these methods, make sure to clean your windows with a paper towel and glass cleaner. If you do the following steps right, you will not only save on costs; your window will also be ready for a brand new car window tint film.
